A few years ago while yard sale hopping I found something I didn't know I needed. Familiar story huh, isn't that what usually happens when you are at a yard sale? I paid $5 for it and my son and I hefted the thing into the trunk of my car. Now it's broken and I need a new one.
Our beat up, old, loud yard sale trash compactor has become an important appliance in our house. We are a family of eight, that includes two parents, three kids, two dogs and one cat. As I'm sure you can imagine, that means a fairly large amount of garbage. Before the compactor our can was so full we couldn't close the lid, and occasionally we would even wait for the truck to empty our container and continue down the road, then we would run across the street with it refilled. With our compactor, our garbage can is usually only about half full on garbage day.
Well, a week ago our beloved compactor bit the big one, and this morning, our can was stuffed full again. I've been looking for a replacement but it looks like it's going to cost us anywhere from $500 to $900 for a basic model, and since it's a relatively unpopular appliance, I'm having a difficult time finding reviews or ratings to help me compare them. I'll probably end up just getting the cheapest model, but even so, that's way up from $5. All for something I didn't know I needed until I had one.

Update on Trash Compactor
ReplyDeleteAfter shopping around I found that I no matter where I went I would have to special order the trash compactor as it was never carried in stores. Because of that I placed an order through Amazon with AJ Madison for a Broan Compactor. It was not the cheapest one I found but it had a 12 to 1 compact ratio when the others had a 4 to 1 ratio, and it was reasonably priced and after $141.90 in delivery charges, the whole thing ended up costing me about $600.
Soon after I placed the order I got a conformation letting me know about when to expect delivery it also contained the tracking information along with the following text.
Please inspect your shipment before you accept and sign for the delivery. Do not assume your product is not damaged if the box and/or packaging are intact. It is important that you open the package and check for concealed damage. Signing for the delivery means you are completely satisfied with the product.
The Yellow truck arrived yesterday, when it did, I was informed that not only would the driver not take the compactor to my kitchen, it was up some stairs, but under no circumstances would he allow me to open and inspect my purchase for damage before signing for it. He kept stating that his job was to drop off the shipment only, and that he was not “RC Willey”, a local furniture retailer. He further added that people are always buying these things online and expecting him to do more than his job required. This on top of the fact that my husband had to stay home all day until work, when I had to run home, waiting for these guys in case they came with no indication as to what time that would be. I did originally refuse the shipment, but after considering that we would probably go through the same hassle with any other Retailer and/or Delivery Company, my husband signed for the delivery. Because, even our front entry is up two stairs the best we could get from the driver was to put it into the garage.
It's still in the garage, unopened, one of these days when my husband and I are home at the same time and not too tired, we'll get it into the kitchen, unpack it and see if it works. If not, on that day, I will be grateful that I used my American Express, because they will duke it out with AJ Madison on my behalf, hey, membership has it's privileges, right?
